Surf Fishing
I am drawn to the challenge of surf fishing and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because it is so different from fly fishing on a river... Or that it can be unpredictable. In any case, I've been fishing the surf down here on South Padre Island for a long time. As a kid, my father would take me along to fish the annual bull red run and I remember having fun catching whiting. I want you to have to oportunity to share this experience with your son...
As time passed by and I graduated high school and went off to college, I always wondered what else was out there. What other types of fish did we not target. As I traveled and fly fished different parts of the world I realized that although fish may have different behaviors, they also have similarities. When I returned to the Rio Grande Valley I immediately started exploring what our beach had to offer. What I've learned is that I want to spend the rest of my life accumulating as much knowledge as possible on this great resource. I love it out here and regardless if the fishing is on or not, your still on the beach with sand on your feet and a breeze through your hair. Fishing the surf speaks to me. You never know what might take your lure and scream 100 yards off your reel. I target everything from whiting, trout and red, tarpon and jacks, and shark. From light tackle to fly fishing, we can do it. I've guided up and down the Americas searching for fish. What I've learned is to recognize opportunities and give you the best chance to catch a fish depending on your skill level. In the case of fly fishing, it's just catching them a certain way... I personally don't mind chuncking bait or flinging a fly. Every situation is different and for me it's not about filling the cooler (your more than welcome to) but rather figuring out situations and what the best thing to do on any particular day is. There are no guarantees when fishing the surf. You do it because it's a different way to approach fishing. It intrigues the mind...
Please keep in mind that the elements on any particular day can affect fishing. Strong winds, seaweed, tides, etc... all play a factor on what type of fishing is available. It is best to keep your expectations low and your patience high and enjoy a day on the beach.
Father/Son trips or a day out with the guys. (Or your wife for that matter.) Just bring people you like...
